Company brain awareness reaches 70% in a new Slite survey of 149 teams, yet fewer than 1 in 5 report one that works and 55% of DIY attempts are abandoned
PARIS, FRANCE, August 28, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A “company brain” (the persistent knowledge layer that makes company context usable by both people and AI agents) is now a term 70% of teams recognize, yet fewer than one in five (19.6%) report having one that works, according to new research from Slite, the AI-powered knowledge base company. The biggest blocker is accuracy: 77% of respondents cite it as their top concern about adopting a company brain, ahead of privacy (59%) and cost (58%).
The term, coined on tech Twitter in April 2026 and picked up in Y Combinator’s Summer 2026 Request for Startups, has spread faster than the infrastructure behind it. More than half of teams surveyed (56%) say their company’s knowledge lives in Slack and Teams threads rather than in any system built for it, and 22% still rely on email chains. The findings come from a survey of 149 AI-forward teams conducted in July 2026 as part of the research behind Company Brain 101, Slite’s interactive ebook on the topic.
Teams that tried to close the gap on their own mostly failed: of those that attempted to build a company brain themselves, 55% abandoned the effort, most citing the maintenance burden.
The gap matters more as teams hand work to AI agents. Where knowledge sits in chat threads and inboxes, agents cannot reach it, and where documentation is stale, they act on it anyway. As one surveyed executive put it: “The cost shifted from ‘someone wastes 20 minutes’ to ‘the system confidently executes on wrong facts.’”
The research also found that 78% say a named human owner is what makes documentation trustworthy, while 18% say they never fully trust documentation at all.
